Summer school / Faculty-led: The Forest Sector's Contribution to Sustainability of the Built Environment in Alpine Europe

Travel through Switzerland, Northern Italy, Slovenia and Austria and experience the sustainable building practices in Alpine Europe!

June 25 - July 8, 2017

 

A short term study programme will begin in Slovenia and continue through Northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland with a day trip to Croatia.

The built environment within which we live, study, and work has a significant environmental impact. This course explores the sustainability of the built environment following the value chain of wooden buildings starting in the forest and following through manufacturing, construction, and use of various types and designs of housing. Visits will be made to research institutions that support the housing value chain. 

The following key topics will be explored during the course:

  • European forestry practices.
  • Use of wood in historic structures.
  • Forest products manufacturing in Europe.
  • European design of wood products for residential use.
  • Interaction between culture, design and the forest sector. 

 

The course is taught in cooperation between the University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia and Oregon State University, Oregon, USA.
