Chris has a strong interest in understanding the dynamics of international trade of renewable materials. He teaches Global Trade in Renewable Materials where he tries to help students gain an understanding of these complex markets. He is an active member of the Forest Legality Alliance where he helps other members understand the role of wood science in mitigating illegal logging. He also works with building design professionals to help them understand and utilize renewable materials in the design and construction of buildings.

He is also the Assistant Director of the the Oregon Wood Innovation Center (OWIC) where his role is to help improve the competitiveness of the Oregon forest products industry. The function of OWIC is to link industry professionals to the resources available at the University.
